There’s a place along the river not far from my house where I like to sit and see what I can see. Early last month I was there watching the river when a mink crept out to take a peek at me. After looking me over, it swam out into the river, circled around, came back and climbed out to look at me again, then disappeared back to wherever it came from.
What was most amazing about that experience is that it followed shortly after a large beaver also swam by. The beaver was less curious, and once it noticed me it gave a loud smack with its tail before diving below the surface.
May is when the world roars back to life in Iowa
Everything is finally green again, the weather is usually pleasant, and the critters come out in full force. I wish I was quicker on the draw with my camera so you could see as much as I’ve seen, but these photos will give you a taste of what I’ve encountered on my walks this month. Hopefully you’re out there seeing some of it for yourself!
One morning I was walking along some swampland near the river, and I thought, there’s bound to be something down here. I saw a pair of wood ducks floating in the water. As soon as they saw me, they took off, so I thought, too bad. No picture. But then the drake landed on a dead branch that made him perfectly visible and framed by a small hole in the surrounding vegetation. So, I got a great image of him after all!
Robins are a little easer to catch for a photo, and I also liked the way this one was framed by greenery.
See you next week!
